Our Thanksgiving Tradition
By Chantelle Smith
The snow has come. The mountains look beautiful here in the valley, and the holidays are fast approaching. While it is a beautiful time of year, it can also be a difficult time of the year for some local families. Jack White Real Estate of Mat-Su tries to ease that burden each year by sponsoring Thanksgiving meals through Alaska Family Services. Our Realtors® love our community and love giving back to it whenever they can. Each year we collect money for baskets that include everything a family could need for a Thanksgiving meal. The Monday before Thanksgiving we all meet at Wal-Mart and start filling up carts. As you can see, we have quite a bit of fun with this!
Once shopping is all done, we head back to the office for a basket packing party. When these baskets are all packed up, they go to Alaska Family Services to be given to those needing some help this holiday season. Our annual shopping trip is planned for this coming Monday, November 25th. If you see a group of people having fun and acting silly at Wal-Mart wearing Jack White name tags, stop and say “hi.” We’d love to chat with you!
We are so grateful to be able to give back to our community each year. The people of The Valley make what we do possible, so we want to lend a helping hand when we can. We’ve partnered with Alaska Family Services each Thanksgiving for many, many years. Last year they feed about 677 people. All year long AKAFS works hard at making sure they are doing all they can to support the community – not just during the holiday season.
Alaska Family Services are always willing to help when families in our community are struggling. Since 1979 they have been working locally to support families in need. They run programs like WIC and Child Care Assistance as far as communities throughout Southcentral Alaska. They hold annual events like Project Homeless Connect to connect organizations in our community. They offer an array of services for women, children, and families in need. They support everything from substance abuse counseling and family violence intervention to parenting workshops and residential services for at-risk youth. If you find yourself in a position to give back this holiday season, please think about lending your support to Alaska Family Services. You can check out the ways you can help at akafs.org or visit their Facebook page to be kept up-to-date on all the different events they have going on in our local community.
We hope your Thanksgiving is spent with great people, great food, and that great memories are made. From all of us at Jack White Real Estate Mat-Su, Happy Thanksgiving!
